The Big Horn action features a floating bolt head, which is a popular feature among many precision marksmen. It also features a solid, one-piece bolt for strength, with a shorter handle that will fit into scabbards for all you horseback hunters. 😉 The integral 0.25” recoil lug gives a much longer barrel tenon, with more barrel/action engagement for a sturdier connection. Big Horn believes this aids in accuracy when using heavier barrels. Owned and operated by George Gardner, GA Precision has had a profound impact on the advancement of the practical precision rifle discipline. GA Precision actions are OEM manufactured by Defiance Machine (#3 on our list of actions) to GA Precision specifications. Their custom rifle builds are highly regarded and built with only the finest components available (the purchase of one of their M40 clones is on the author’s bucket list).
Sure, they may cost a little more, but their actually making less. Well, adding fall to the firing pin, while perhaps the best answer, is hard work. You might even have to redo the cams, maybe a little welding. Easier still to get a stronger spring, but I believe that’s not what that’s being done on some of the reworked actions. He has invented many of the features you see on today’s top custom actions, such as “Borden bumps”.
Aero Precision’s roots are deeply tied to aerospace, and our drive for clean, perfect engineering and machining stems from that. When you’re building something that will fly in the air, there is no margin for error. Not every manufacturer will have razor thin tolerance levels. Not every manufacturer will personally oversee the development, design and machining of every part that comes off the line.

Saying that Desert Tech makes an action is an understatement … Desert Tech makes a versatile sniper rifle system named the Stealth Recon Scout A1 (SRS-A1). It has a unique bull-pup design that makes it nearly a foot shorter than traditional bolt action rifles with identical barrel lengths. The compact design shifts weight and center-of-gravity rearward, creating a well balanced and relatively short sniper rifle. AI’s double-stack magazine is a cool feature, and envied by shooters on other platforms. Many shooters aren’t aware AI actually has a few different magazines. The most common is probably the single-stack magazine, which is the standard supported by Remington 700 actions and others, like Surgeon, that are based on a similar design.

It is so little that the actions never have to be heat treated again, which is not the norm even among the top actions. The heat treat process can induce slight changes to the steel, which means you’re compromising some of those tight tolerances CNC machines are capable of. I’m not usually a fan of bright colors on a rifle, but I really, really liked that one. But this is coming from a guy with little long range shooting but with an engineering degree. I guess barrels…now that is where there can be some magic induced by the machinist.

In mechanical systems, the stationary ejector is on the receiver wall and the cartridge base hits it as the bolt is retracted, letting you toss brass or just dribble it out. Nice, if you like to collect your empties, rather than go search for them. An integral recoil lug is a benefit for the guy installing it, mitigating the need to line up and hold the lug in place during barrel installation. An integral lug also means fewer facets to machine and worry about squaring up. On the flip side, the holes drilled into the action to hold a dowelled lug in place can weaken the action in one of the most critical areas, just beneath the chamber. A free, unpinned lug might be better than a dowelled lug for strength, but clocking one during the barrel install is a PITA. The barrel interface in all the 700 actions presented is 1 1⁄16-inch with 16, 18, or 20 threads per inch.
But don’t think that this is limited to one action manufacture. Always send a new action to a smith and have him check it all out….the little extra money you spend may save a lot of headaches. However, I think I have a ignition problem popping up in another action, it’s dropping shots low left and a friend said his spring went weak so I’m gonna check mine. Some may argue with me on this but I have found that actions with ignition problems would usually drop the shot low and left. Sometimes barely sticking out of a group, sometimes half a ring away or more.
Last week, I decided to take it off the Rail Gun and build a LV-Sporter on it. I chambered up a new Krieger, got it all set up in time to hit the Range Sunday. Make sure to tell him that you want a dedicated HV stock, if you are sure that you will never ever use the rifle as a LV. Don´t know if he makes one, but it sure doesn´t hurt to ask.
